Elizabeth Gloser DeSantis papers 1939-1945.

The collection contains a small assortment of papers from Elizabeth Gloser DeSantis, who attended nursing school at Michael Reese Hospital in Gary, Indiana in 1938 and 1939, and later enlisted to serve in the 38th Evacuation Unit in 1942. With the 38th Evac, she served in Tunisia and Italy, recording a diary throughout her service. The collection consists of the original diary, a typed transcript of the diary, a photographic scrapbook, some loose photographs and a few other papers.

In 1940, Gen. George Marshall approved formation of the U.S. Army 38th Evacuation Hospital at the request of Charlotte-area doctors and nurses. The 38th Evac was activated in March, 1942 and received military training at Fort Bragg. The unit served in England (August-October, 1942); North Africa (November, 1942-September, 1943); and Italy (through July, 1945). The 38th Evac supported front line aid stations and mobile surgical units, treated disease, and transferred patients to general hospitals...
